Uganda use of the Greenseeder Hand Planter Uganda use of the Greenseeder Hand Planter Dr. Raun, I offered a quick on-the-field training for the two men found in one (HP1) of the attached photos about how to use the OSU GreenSeeder to plant corn as well as the associated benefits. "The planter will allow my wife and I to do separate field activities since I'll not need her at the time of planting," Tony (using the planter) said. Tony is very much willing to continue to use the planter and offer feedback for improvement.   As we left our training site, we came across a group of men who were waiting to buy beef as seen in the second photo (HP2). When they saw Tony carrying the planter, they asked what it was and surprisingly, Tony explained its mode of operation and the benefits very well that I needed to only add a few comments.   I'll quote one of them (attendees to Tony): "With this planter, I think I can now plant one garden alone since I need no person to be putting seeds in the holes I make". One garden is locally an area equivalent to one acre.   It is a crop planting season in Uganda now and I'll provide more information regarding the usage of the GreenSeeder (GS) including yields that will be obtained from GS.   -- Thank you,   Lawrence, Aula

REPORTS
July 8, 2016 (Uganda, Peter Omara)

Dr. Raun, The product we have apparently works without doubt. The only part I would advise to be modified is the tip simply to avoid getting clogged up with soil. The tip I showed you in the picture (modified from here) is comparatively better than the ones that came with the planter. I have placed the planters in the hands of few farmers and they have used them with the modified tip without complains, although they had to learn and adjust to using the tool. In my own opinion, there is still a lot of work to be done on the sociological aspects, creating awareness, marketing, promotion with regard to the adoption and use of the OSU planter. Otherwise, I am confident enough to say the product we have work without doubt.

Regards, Peter

Dr. Raun
Here in El Salvador first planting season (the big one) is over, there is a second season in august just in small areas. In my opinion  the planter only needs a drum that delivar 2 seeds, this is an issue that farmers object because they plant two seeds per hill. I am working with JICA now (Japanese) and I have little chance to make visits to the west part of the country where they plant in august, if you want you can send me a couple of planters and see what I can do and dont forget to send me  3 or 4 drums (two seeds) to give them to the people that already have the GS.  Let me tell you that I also gave one of the planters to a project which is developed with rural students, the teacher sent me his comments which I am sharing to you in other e-mail..   Edgar Ascencio
January 19, 2016, Becca Harman, University of Tennessee.

I evaluated 7 planters -- dibble stick (crow bar), OSU Greenseeder, Chinese Planting Hoe, Haraka Rolling Planter, Brazilian Jab (Fitarelli), CA-Seeder 100 (one man riding seeder) and a 6-row JD conservation planter. The Dibble stick and the OSU Greenseeder showed the strongest yield in both soybean residue and corn residue among all the treatments and the highest ear-stalk ratios. A complimentary study was performed comparing the efficiency and usability of the hand planters -- the OSU Greenseeder maintained a high efficiency while achieving the highest usability.
